Britney Spears vs. Australia

This article is dedicated to Gabriella Ilisco, who helped me understand the true Britney Spears fan.

There are some things in the entertainment business that are just well-known facts. One of them is that Britney Spears lip-syncs in concerts. This is not a shock like when Ashlee Simpson was caught lip-syncing in 2004. Instead, this is a continuing problem that Britney Spears has no intention of changing.

Before Britney Spears performs in Australia, the Australian Government wants ticket purchasers to be informed that part of the show is “pre-recorded.” What they really want is for fans to be warned that Britney Spears will be lip-syncing in at least part of the concert.

There are two ways that we can look at the intentions of the government of Australia. First, they may want to protect the few fans of Britney Spears who do not know that Britney lip-syncs in concerts. This is a question of consumer protection. If one fan has not heard it through the grapevine that Britney Spears lip-syncs, that fan can be informed prior to buying a ticket. After being informed, the fan can choose whether or not to buy a ticket to a show that he or she knows will include lip-syncing.

The second way we can look at this is that the government of Australia wants Britney Spears to admit publicly that she lip-syncs. I don’t have a problem with this because if an artist chooses to lip-sync, the artist should acknowledge the truth. I personally believe that it should be public record that an artist will actually lip-sync during concerts.

Whether the Australian Government is trying to protect consumers or to get Britney Spears to admit that she lip-syncs, I support their decision. Those who buy tickets to a concert should be made aware of what they will get when they see the performance. The seller of the tickets has an obligation to the ticket buyers to make sure that they understand that they will be buying tickets to watch Britney dance, but not necessarily sing to songs. If the consumer is informed of what he or she is getting prior to the purchase of a ticket, then the consumer cannot complain about being ripped off.

I personally believe that this should be the law in the United States as well. While I have no interest in ever going to a Britney Spears concert, who can predict the next artist who will decide to lip-sync at concerts? I may become a fan of a new singer who will do the same thing without my knowledge. I feel that I deserve to know if the singer will actually sing in the concert or not.

One more question has been on my mind. Why would anyone want to go to a concert in which the artist is lip-syncing? Do they really want to go see Britney Spears dance to songs or is it the performance that entertains them? I turned to a fan of Britney Spears named Gabriella Ilisco for her viewpoint.

Gabriella said, “After all the years, I know after buying hundred dollar tickets that she most likely will be lip-syncing. The thing is, she is probably the only artist that I would be willing to see who lip-syncs. The reason is because her shows are ridiculous. Honestly, even if she cannot or doesn’t want to sing and dance at the same time, she is an amazing performer. The shows that she puts on are seriously an experience. She’s just Britney. She can do what she wants and still own the world. She’s phenomenal.”

My take on this is that there are fans that enjoy the overall experience of a Britney Spears concert and are willing to watch even if Britney is lip-syncing. This is why I believe that even if Britney Spears admits that her concerts will include lip-syncing, she will still sell every ticket. If an artist can be honest with her fans and the fans will still buy tickets, there should be no problem with the artist admitting that she will be lip-syncing.

It is time for Britney Spears to admit publicly that she lip-syncs in concerts. She should be honest with all of her fans, including the very few who still believe that she sings at concerts. With her honestly and their loyalty, she will still sell the same number of tickets.
