Rolling In His Grave Over Marilyn Monroe

This story upsets me greatly.

I believe that there are certain things that you just cannot sell. One of them is the grave that a body is already resting in. An unoccupied grave is one thing, but once a body is in a grave or a crypt, it should be off limits legally.

Years ago, Richard Poncher bought the crypt right above the crypt of Marilyn Monroe and the crypt right next to the first one. His goal was to be buried right above Marilyn Monroe and have his wife buried right next to him. Not only that, but he would be buried facing down so he and Marilyn Monroe would be facing each other.

Richard Poncher died in 1986 and was buried faced down right above Marilyn Monroe. That does sound creepy, but that was the choice that he made and his body has been facing Marilyn Monroe for the last 23 years.

His widow, Elsie Poncher, has decided to sell her husband’s crypt above Marilyn Monroe and move his body one spot over to where she was to be buried.

The crypt was sold for $4.6 million on Ebay. This money would more than help pay off the $1.6 million mortgage on her Beverly Hills home. Justice may occur because the person who won the crypt on Ebay has backed away from the bid. So the crypt above Marilyn Monroe has not been sold yet.

Elsie Poncher had admitted that her husband had told her, “If I croak, if you don’t put me upside down over Marilyn, I’ll haunt you the rest of my life.” I think that he meant that he would haunt her for the rest of her life. Apparently she must not be worried about that if she is willing to take his crypt away from him.

Now here’s my opinion. It is creepy that Richard Poncher wanted to be buried face down over Marilyn Monroe, but not wrong or immoral. This act of silliness would hurt no one. Yes it is not only creepy, but silly. With everything between the two bodies, it would be like facing someone with a brick wall in the way.

But the actions of his widow are not silly or creepy. They are deeply immoral. His body has been at rest for 23 years. He wanted to be buried there for eternity and he bought the crypt above Marilyn Monroe for that purpose. The dead should have some rights to not have their resting places taken from them. In this case, they are not moving a body to build a mall or new roads. They are not moving it for any reason that is necessary. They are moving it for money against the wishes of the dead. Why should someone have the right to move the body of a “loved” one? I really wish that there was a law against this because it really offends me that someone can sell the resting place of a loved one for money.

What about the body of Richard Poncher? The body has been faced down for 23 years. If they really do move his body, are they going to then flip it right-side-up? Should he have to have his body faced down above some other dead person? Hugh Hefner will eventually be buried in the crypt on one side of Marilyn Monroe, so that could mean that Richard Poncher could be facing the founder of Playboy Magazine for all eternity. I’m not sure which side that crypt would be, so I cannot verify whether he would be above Hugh Hefner or someone else.

When I die, I want to be buried facing up. I would never want to be buried faced down, even if I was in the crypt above Marilyn Monroe. But Richard Poncher made a decision for his resting place and he should have had the right to not have his body moved after death… especially not for a winning bid on Ebay.

I don’t know if Richard Poncher really would have the power to haunt his wife. But if he does have that power, he should do it right now.

It is really sick that a widow would sell out her husband like that.
If he is ever moved, I hope he haunts her.
